THIS SPECIAL PROGRAM IN HONOR OF MAY IS MENTAL HEALTH MONTH.
How can literature and the arts counter the stigma of mental illness? We’ll move from a short fictional film by award-winning director Nira Burstein that addresses the sensitive topic of suicide, followed by a curated selection of readings by national SLAM winner Nina Robins and others, each introduced with brief context about the poet and the themes in their work. These works resist the tidy narratives that dominate social media and instead offer language that acknowledges uncertainty, contradiction, and the slow process of care. The evening will close with space for discussion, inviting the audience to reflect on and challenge the oversimplified narratives we often encounter in the media and in our communities.
This program may include emotionally intense material. All are welcome, whether you come as a reader, a supporter, or someone seeking language for your own experience.
